Skennen'kó:wa
ken?—a Kanienʼkéha greeting meaning Do You Carry Great Peace?—invites
reflection on peace as a living and ethical practice of responsibility,
reciprocity, and care. Bringing together photography, video, sculpture, and
installation by Kanien¡¯kehá:ka artists Shelley Niro, Melissa General,
and Hannah Claus, the exhibition is grounded in a Haudenosaunee
worldview that understands peace as an active, everyday commitment carried
forward through relationships across generations, memory, and community.
Centering
the political, cultural, and spiritual philosophies of Haudenosaunee
sovereignty, the exhibition advances rematriation, an Indigenous women-led
process of restoration that renews intergenerational relationships with
ancestral lands, waters, and cultural knowledge.
Presented
in dialogue with Gwangju¡¯s history of democratic resistance, Skennen¡¯kó:wa
ken? resonates with the 2026 Gwangju Biennale theme, You Must Change
Your Life, affirming that meaningful transformation emerges through the
daily practice of skennen (peace).
