광주광역시 남구 이강하미술관은 근대역사문화마을 양림동에 위치한 광주 1종 공립미술관으로 국내외 나라와 역사를 배경으로 세대와 시대를 연결하는 다양한 시각 예술 전시회 및 교육 프로그램을 운영하는 기관입니다. 올해 2023년 캐나다X한국 수교 60주년을 기념하는 해를 맞이하며, 제14회 광주비엔날레 캐나다 파빌리온 <Once a Myth, Becoming Real (신화, 현실이 되다)> 전시회 및 온라인 버츄얼 워크숍 프로그램을 개최합니다.

이번 전시는 ‘West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative(웨스트 바핀 에스키모 쿠어퍼레이티브)’ 가 오랜 시간 순수한 자연과 동물, 인간의 민속 신화에 대한 전통과 믿음을 간직하고 있는 Inuit(이누이트) 예술과 예술가들의 삶과 작품을 지원 및 연구한 최대 최초의 결과물입니다.

과거-현재-미래에 공존하는 캐나다 이누이트 32명 작가 및 90여점의 예술 작품과 다양한 자료들로 구성된 특별한 국제관 전시가 될 것입니다. 캐나다 큐레이터 윌리엄 허프먼과 광주 큐레이터 이선은 이번 전시를 위해 상호 협력하고 광주와 캐나다의 역사와 공간, 시간을 함께 조사・연구하여 이번 캐나다 파빌리온 <Once a Myth, Becoming Real> 전시회로 최종 구현하였습니다. 그 역사적인 현장에 여러분을 초대합니다.

The LEE KANGHA Art Museum in the Nam-gu district of Gwangju is a first-class public art museum located in Yangrim-dong. This museum has been engaged with various exhibitions and educational programs and connects different generations and eras.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Canada and South Korea in 2023, the 14th Gwangju Biennale Canadian Pavilion <Once a Myth, Becoming Real> will hold an exhibition, archive, and online virtual workshop programs. It is also the first and largest exhibition in South Korea. The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative has supported and researched Inuit art for a long time: traditions and folk beliefs, taking care of pure fauna, flora and humans.

This International Pavilion Exhibition is particularly special. It consists of 32 Canadian Inuit artists and 90 artworks of various materials, where past, present, and future coexist. William Huffman and Lee Sun curated together <Once a Myth, Becoming Real> on the basis of mutual cooperation and research of history, space and time in Gwangju and Canada. 한국에서 진행되는 제 14회 광주비엔날레 파빌리온 전시 중 하나인 <신화, 현실이 되다>는 현대 캐나다 이누이트 예술에 대한 가장 큰 전시입니다. 이번 전시는 32명의 예술가들과 90점 이상의 예술 작품으로 킨가이트 스튜디오의 최신 작품들을 전시합니다. 몇 가지의 작품을 제외한 다수의 작품들은 이번 전시를 위해 2022년에 제작되었습니다. 전시 참여 작가들과 함께 故 케노주악 아셰바크에게 경의를 표합니다. 그녀는 변함 없는 이누이트 예술의 대모이며 킨가이트 스튜디오의 초기 멤버였습니다. 그녀의 ＜해초를 먹는 토끼＞ 작품이 미술관 입구에 자리 잡고 있으며, 그녀의 조각품 중 하나인 ＜곰＞은 전시장에 전시되어 이누이트 표현의 역사를 이야기하고 있습니다. 이 작품들은 이누이트 예술의 토대가 얼마나 영향력이 있는지를 상기시키기 위한 것이기도 합니다. 이번 전시는 오랜 시간 대를 이어 온 이누이트 예술 작품을 인정하는 동시에 캐나다와 한국의 수교 60주년을 기념합니다. 국가 간의 이야기와 함께 <신화, 현실이 되다>는 수만 킬로미터에 걸쳐 공유된 역사적 가치를 상징하며, 문화적 표현이 어떻게 언어를 초월할 수 있는지 보여주는 예가 될 것입니다.

Entitled Once a Myth, Becoming Real, this exhibition is one of nine national presentations comprising the 14th Gwangju Biennale Pavilion and represents one of the largest examinations of contemporary Inuit art ever undertaken in the Republic of Korea. The project features 32 artists and more than 90 works of art, representing a cross-section of recent production at Kinngait Studios. With only a few exceptions, the works of art comprising Once a Myth, Becoming Real were created in 2022 and especially for the Gwangju Biennale. Alongside the more than two dozen practicing artists is an homage to the late Kenojuak Ashevak. Arguably the grande dame of Inuit art, she was part of the first wave of creators to populate Kinngait Studios. A monumental reproduction of her sealskin print entitled Rabbit Eating Seaweed dominates the museum entrance, and one of her diminutive but very rare serpentinite carvings, entitled Bear, displayed jewe卜like, grounds the exhibition in a history of Arctic __________________expression__________________. These works are also intended as a reminder of how influential the foundations of Inuit art remain. With this exhibition, we acknowledge more than six decades of Inuit art-making, while at the same time celebrating a 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Republic of Korea. With this added political narrative, Once a Myth, Becoming Real, is symbolic of the shared values that can span tens of thousands of kilometres, and a shining example of how cultural __________________expression__________________ can transcend language as a powerful unifier.
