The LEE KANGHA Art Museum in the Nam-gu district of Gwangju is a first-class public art museum located in Yangrim-dong. This museum has been engaged with various exhibitions and educational programs and connects different generations and eras.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Canada and South Korea in 2023, the 14th Gwangju Biennale Canadian Pavilion <Once a Myth, Becoming Real> will hold an exhibition, archive, and online virtual workshop programs. It is also the first and largest exhibition in South Korea. The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative has supported and researched Inuit art for a long time: traditions and folk beliefs, taking care of pure fauna, flora and humans.
This International Pavilion Exhibition is particularly special. It consists of 32 Canadian Inuit artists and 90 artworks of various materials, where past, present, and future coexist. William Huffman and Lee Sun curated together <Once a Myth, Becoming Real> on the basis of mutual cooperation and research of history, space and time in Gwangju and Canada. Entitled Once a Myth, Becoming Real, this exhibition is one of nine national presentations comprising the 14th Gwangju Biennale Pavilion and represents one of the largest examinations of contemporary Inuit art ever undertaken in the Republic of Korea. The project features 32 artists and more than 90 works of art, representing a cross-section of recent production at Kinngait Studios. With only a few exceptions, the works of art comprising Once a Myth, Becoming Real were created in 2022 and especially for the Gwangju Biennale. Alongside the more than two dozen practicing artists is an homage to the late Kenojuak Ashevak. Arguably the grande dame of Inuit art, she was part of the first wave of creators to populate Kinngait Studios. A monumental reproduction of her sealskin print entitled Rabbit Eating Seaweed dominates the museum entrance, and one of her diminutive but very rare serpentinite carvings, entitled Bear, displayed jeweÜÔlike, grounds the exhibition in a history of Arctic ________________expression________________. These works are also intended as a reminder of how influential the foundations of Inuit art remain. With this exhibition, we acknowledge more than six decades of Inuit art-making, while at the same time celebrating a 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Republic of Korea. With this added political narrative, Once a Myth, Becoming Real, is symbolic of the shared values that can span tens of thousands of kilometres, and a shining example of how cultural ________________expression________________ can transcend language as a powerful unifier.
